Bee Orchid, Bank of River Exe, Exeter, May 2012

This photo was taken last week (May 2012). The grass on the banks of the River Exe has never been as long as this, in the 40 odd years I’ve lived here. Thanks to Council cutbacks, thanks to the financial crunch! And this bee orchid appeared in the grass. They are not so common, although they have done well on road banks and traffic islands in recent years, provided they are not mown too frequently. And two days later the grass by the River Exe was mown. So the bee orchid is gone. But it was there, that’s the extraordinary thing.
