Keep on running…baby

Anyone remember this oldie from the ’90s? “Keep on running baby” by Milli Vanilli?

It never fails to make me grin. I was introduced to this song when the “Pepsi Beats” album came out way back during my childhood. Yep, those were the days of VCRs and cassettes – no Blu-Ray discs then! You’d probably think a song like this is too peppy or light-hearted to touch you at a deeper level. But one of the lines in the song has stayed with me through the ages. It goes something like this:

“Listen to what he says/ It’s all about today”

I guess the song’s about the escapist in all of us, how we tend to run away from things instead of confronting them. It really is all about today, seizing the day, making the most of now. It’s like how we forget to breathe sometimes, in the stress of everyday life. Take a deep breath, smell the flowers, be in the moment. It’s not for nothing Europe has started embracing it.

“Time poverty”, information overload, multitasking like there’s no tomorrow – and before you know it, hours, days and months have passed by. On a similar note, slow food is also becoming popular these days. Turns out, mom was right – chewing on your food well not only helped you feel fuller faster but also helped digest it properly.

It’s no wonder then that people these days pay big bucks for vacations in remote, offbeat places – no internet, no TV, nothing. Nada. You might have withdrawal symptoms but that’s okay. Learn to switch off sometimes. It’s good for the heart and the soul.

So the next time you feel a wave of panic, stress at work, feel like you’re carrying the world on your shoulders, just take a deep breath, take in the moment and realize – this too shall pass. Cheers to the slow movement – and please sip on the wine…slowly…
